Letters from the Council President

February 2012

What should I write about? This question comes up once a month for many of us who contribute to the newsletter. I’ve heard Pastor Alan talk about this before in relation to writing a sermon. Sometimes it’s difficult to come up with the right words. I am sitting here this afternoon, thinking about a topic, and the television is on in the background. What are they talking about? . . . Presidential candidates! Without a better topic to write about, let’s talk about the Presidential election process.

I also must start by saying that it doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat, a Republican, or an Independent when it comes to this message. I guess the first question I have is “Why do I need to hear about this so much when the election is 10 months away?” On top of that, the message that we hear from the majority of candidates, in my opinion, can best be described as “garbage.” I can only assume that this means that we’re not going to accomplish very much this year to solve our country and our world’s problems. This is very sad when you consider all of the difficult issues that we face. The process has deteriorated to the point that most people feel it is beyond repair.

I’ll change gears for a second. I’m going to make another assumption that most of you who are reading this spend a fair amount of time in prayer. Just as I sometimes have trouble determining a topic to write about, I’m willing to bet there are times when all of us struggle for new prayer topics.

I guess I’m asking that we match these two thoughts together. Please pray for our leaders and the entire election process. Pray for them to spend their time and energy working together to solve important problems instead of playing their “big game.” This is a huge problem and if we don’t get it under control, we will most certainly regret it. How big of a problem is it? I suppose I’m suggesting that it has become too large to handle on our own. Let’s ask for help!!

God Bless,
Jim Meissner
